GravelDuro: Epic Gravel meets Enduro-Style Stage Racing
GravelDuro is a party on wheels, mixing the perfect blend of social riding, gravel-centric competition stages, and post-race relaxation. The course covers over 100km of the Tasman countryside starting and finishing in Kaiteriteri including gravel roads, singletrack, forestry, and short sealed sections.
The racing occurs over 4 timed 'stages' within the course, linked by scenic liaisons, including a catered lunch stop. The winner is the rider with the least combined time across the 4 stages. Once you've finished the course it's time to kick back and enjoy dinner, drinks, and live music at the afterparty on the Kaiteriteri waterfront, you've earned it!
The full entry option includes:
Race entry
Two nights at Kaiteriteri campground
Full catering on race day
Event t-shirt
Ticket to the after-party
If you like MTB racing, the Karmakaze MTB Enduro takes place the very next day at Kaiteriteri MTB Park. The event includes 5 timed downhill stages on some of the Grade 3-5 trails in the park. Might need something more than a gravel bike for that! More information and entries open now through the Kaiteriteri MTB website.
Location
GravelDuro is based at the beautiful beachfront Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Campsite. A campsite is included with your entry (BYO tent) and campervan pitches with hook-ups are available. If you'd like a more luxurious experience you can contact KRR (info@krr.co.nz) to upgrade to a cabin or waterfront apartment to share with your friends and family. Simply mention you're taking part in the event and include your order number to qualify for our special event rates.
Catering
The catering includes a buffet breakfast on Saturday morning before the race, lunch on the course, and a buffet dinner on Saturday night after the race. We can cater to your dietary requirements, just make sure to include them in your entry.
Course
The full course is just over 100km long and covers a mixture of singletrack (20%), gravel roads (70%), and sealed roads (10%). Within the course there are 4 timed stages linked by untimed transfers, just like a standard enduro race. The difference is that our timed stages aren't all downhill, and the transfers aren't all uphill!
For the competitive ones out there, let’s be clear: this is a proper race, and we expect the podium to be filled with drop-bar bikes. However, given the challenging technical nature of at least some of our stages, a lightweight mountain bike with a fit, skilled rider behind the bars is going to be in with a fighting chance if they play the right tactics.
More details about the course and stages are on the Course page.
Event Timing
We expect the fastest riders to complete the full course in around 4 hours, with an average rider taking 6 hours and all riders done within 8 hours. There will be a shortcut towards the end of the course that avoids the final Stage (and the last climb) for anyone who doesn't make the cutoff time or is too tired to ride up another hill!
Remember the first rider to the finish is unlikely to be the winner given the enduro format!
